Run of Remembrance: 20 Marathons for Commonwealth Women during WW1 and WW2
In 2025, I will embark on a transformative journey – the running equivalent of 20 marathons – to honour the strength of Commonwealth women during WW1 and WW2. This challenge is a tribute to the brave women who served in the British Armed Forces from the UK, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Indian subcontinent (Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka). It also recognises the countless women - often forgotten in history - who managed households and communities while their partners and family members were away, bravely fighting for the British Armed Forces. The Journey
Why It Matters Commonwealth women faced unparalleled challenges during the World Wars. Many served on the front lines in various capacities, while others maintained the fabric of daily life at home - ensuring that families, communities, and the nation endured despite the absence of their loved ones. Their strength, ingenuity, and perseverance are legacies that deserve to be remembered and celebrated. Together, we can honour their sacrifices and ensure that their contributions continue to inspire future generations. This run is more than a personal challenge - it is a living memorial to the unshakeable spirit of Commonwealth women. Let’s celebrate their legacy and remember that every step taken in their honour brings us closer to understanding the true meaning of resilience. |
