WO1 Ashok Kumar Chauhan MBE is a valuable member at the Memorial gates council. Mr Chauhan has dedicated an impressive 47 years to the British Army, embodying the values of service, dedication, and community engagement throughout his illustrious career. Born in Kenya, Ashok arrived in the UK in 1970 and joined the Army in 1977. His initial training at Woolwich marked the beginning of a journey that would see him rise through the ranks from a Gunner Surveyor to Regimental Training Warrant Officer in the Royal Artillery.
His early postings included Gutersloh, Germany, where he honed his skills and steadily climbed the ranks. His commitment to excellence was recognized with numerous awards, including the Adjutant General’s Commendations and the Goshan Medal in 1998 for his achievements in sport and service. In 1999, Ashok was honoured with an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, a testament to his outstanding contributions to the military.
Throughout his career, WO1 Chauhan has served with various Artillery units across Germany and has been deployed worldwide, including Australia, Barbados, Canada, India, South Africa, New Zealand, Malaysia, Kenya, Israel, Egypt, the USA, Europe, and on numerous operational tours such as the Falklands Islands, Northern Ireland, the Gulf, Bosnia, a United Nations tour of Cyprus, and Afghanistan. His service was further distinguished with the NATO Meritorious Service Medal and the title of NATO SNCO of the year during Operation Herrick in 2007/8. In 2018, he received the Chief of General Staff’s Commendations, adding to his long list of accolades. In addition to his military duties, Ashok has excelled in sports, representing the Army in boxing, squash, and cricket at the highest levels. He also played hockey for the Royal Artillery and Combined Services and managed the Combined Services under-23s hockey team.
WO1 Chauhan currently serves as the Operations Warrant Officer for Civil Engagement at Headquarters Regional Command and was the Second in Command of the Army’s Diversity Action Recruiting Team. His role involves promoting the Army to various ethnic communities across the nation, with a particular passion for recruiting Asian youth into the British Army. His dedication to this cause is well recognized within the Indian community, where he is highly regarded for his unwavering passion for military service.
Despite his numerous achievements, Ashok remains deeply connected to his Indian heritage. He devotes his spare time to his wife, Savita, his daughter, Pritie, and his grandchildren, Keya and Rishi.
