In a remarkable display of determination and tribute, the First #100kmMarch towards the Commonwealth Memorial Gates in London was a testament to the unwavering spirit of Commonwealth soldiers from World Wars 1 and 2. Led by our council member, Major Munish Chauhan MBBS, MRCS, PgDip, RAMC, this dedicated team's journey was not just a physical challenge but a profound homage to history's heroes.
The march commenced with participants carrying a weight of 15kg on their backs, a symbolic gesture mirroring the hardships faced by the soldiers they aimed to honor. Each step through ankle-deep mud was a battle against the elements and their own physical limits, making every stride forward a triumph of will. Despite the grueling conditions, the team exhibited an incredible determination to push through. Their shared vision, to pay the utmost respect to the Commonwealth soldiers, bound them together, driving their resolve to complete the march regardless of the obstacles in their path. Over the course of four days, the team collectively took over 3.5 million steps, illustrating their unwavering commitment to the cause. Bonds were forged amidst the challenges, creating a sense of camaraderie and accomplishment that will be cherished for years to come. The success of the march reverberated with soldiers and the public alike, sparking conversations and interest in the Commonwealth's pivotal role in WW1 and WW2. Engaging with members of the public along the route, the team received a warm and positive response, further reinforcing the significance of their mission. Feedback at the Commonwealth Memorial Gates in London from esteemed figures such as Lord Bilimoria, the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, and high commissioners from various countries, highlighted the impact of this commemorative event. Each day of the march was dedicated to poignant causes, from honoring Women in War on International Women's Day to educating others about the Commonwealth's contributions. Paying tribute to the Commonwealth Victoria Cross recipients of WW1 and WW2 ensured that their bravery and sacrifices remain etched in memory. As the curtain falls on this inaugural 100km Commonwealth March, the organizers stand tall with pride for what has been achieved.
