South West Africa
The Allied campaign in the German colony of South West Africa (now Namibia) started badly, with defeat for a South African expeditionary force on 27 September 1914 at Sandfontein. The South Africans had to withdraw temporarily to deal with a rebellion in their own country by anti-government white Boer farmers. However by the end of November the South African troops were back in German South West Africa, and they began an unstoppable advance through the country.
On 9 July 1915, having been refused a negotiated armistice, the Germans surrendered unconditionally.
