VJ Day
To mark the 75th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day, the Memorial Gates Council and the Ministry of Defence held a joint wreath laying Ceremony at the Memorial Gates. The intention being to pay our due respect to those from the Commonwealth and Nepal who fought in the Far East Campaign during World War 2, ensuring their immense contribution does not go unnoticed or forgotten.
Wreaths laid by:
Baroness Goldie DL, Minster of State (Ministry of Defence)
“Honoured to be joining the nation in marking VJ Day, shining a light on a conflict often perceived as the ‘forgotten war’. The war in the Far East and Pacific was pivotal, a huge multinational effort, representing the best of what the Commonwealth had to offer.”
Major Mani Rai MBE, Brigade Secretary to the Brigade of Gurkhas
“Words are inadequate to describe the horrors for those who served in the Far East. They endured heat, leeches, mosquitoes and venomous snakes of the Burmese jungle fighting a professional, efficient and ruthless enemy. The Kohima Epitaph best encapsulates the spirit of those men and women who fought and died in Burma: ‘When you go home, Tell them of us and say, For your tomorrow, We gave our today.’
The Memorial Gates stand to ensure their ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
